Term 4 is the longest stretch of the school year to get wrong. It's ten weeks, the days are getting hotter, the pollen is up, and the end-of-year events start piling in. The house you coasted through the holidays with often isn't the house you want for the school-morning rush.

You have the last week of the break to fix that. This guide covers the spot where school gear lands, the switch to summer uniforms, a short weekday routine, and a proper reset clean before the first bell. If you spent the long weekend on the deck, our Labour Day clean-up plan covers that side of things.

Mark the Date: SA public schools start Term 4 on Monday 12 October and finish on Friday 11 December. The weekend of 10 and 11 October is your window for the reset.

Why Term 4 Is Different

Winter terms are about wet coats and closed windows. Term 4 flips it: doors and windows open, shoes pick up dry grass and pollen, and everyone comes home hot and hungry. Daylight saving started on Sunday 4 October, so the evenings are longer and the kids are outside later, which means more outdoor dirt coming back in.

What Changes at Home

  • Open windows let in pollen, dust and grass seed
  • Hot afternoons mean sweaty hats, bottles and gym gear in the bag
  • Concerts, sports days and end-of-year events fill the calendar

The Goal

  • One place for every bag, hat and bottle
  • A short daily habit instead of a weekend catch-up
  • A clean base to start from on Monday morning

Pro Tip: Spring pollen is the quiet culprit behind a lot of sneezy school mornings. Our pollen season guide covers the whole house.

Set Up the School-Bag Landing Zone

Most of the mess in a school household starts in the same spot: bags dropped in the hallway, hats on the floor, shoes wherever they landed. Give all of it a home by the door and the rest of the house stays clear.

The Setup

  • One hook per child at their height, for the bag and the hat
  • A tray or basket for shoes, so grass and dirt stay in one spot
  • A washable mat inside the door that can go through the machine

Clean the Gear

  • Empty every bag fully, shake out the crumbs and wipe the lining
  • Wash the lunchbox, the drink bottle and its lid and straw, including the seals
  • Wash the school hat and any washable bag, and dry them fully before packing

Watch For: Drink bottle lids and straws are where mould likes to hide, and warm weather makes it worse. Take them apart fully rather than rinsing the bottle alone. Our back-to-school germ guide has the full list.

The Summer Uniform Switch

Term 4 is when winter jumpers go away and summer uniforms come out. It's the best moment of the year to sort the kids' wardrobes, because you're touching every item anyway.

Sort Before You Store

  • Try on the summer uniform now, so you know what needs replacing before Monday
  • Wash winter jumpers before they go into storage, since stains set in over summer
  • Pass on anything outgrown while you're there

Wardrobe Wipe-Down

  • Empty the drawers, wipe the insides and vacuum the floor underneath
  • Check school shoes for wear and knock out the sandy grit inside
  • Put the week's uniforms where they can be grabbed in one go

Pro Tip: Name tags go on before the first wash, not after the first lost hat. Do it while the pile is already out on the bed.

A 15-Minute Weekday Routine

Ten weeks is long enough for any good intention to fade. A short routine, tied to something that already happens every afternoon, is what holds. Here it is in three parts.

🎒 At the Door (3 minutes)

  • Bags and hats on hooks, shoes on the tray
  • Lunchbox and bottle straight to the kitchen

🧽 In the Kitchen (7 minutes)

  • Wash the lunch gear and leave it open to air-dry
  • Clear and wipe the bench so tomorrow starts clean

🌙 Before Bed (5 minutes)

  • Quick sweep or vacuum just inside the entry
  • Uniform, hat and bag laid out for the morning

Make It Stick: Kids as young as five can hang their own bag and hat. Make it their job from day one of term and it stops being a fight by week three.

The Pre-Term Reset Weekend

Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October are the last two days of the break. Spend them on the jobs that make Monday easier, and leave the rest for the weekday routine.

Saturday: The House

  • Floors, kitchen and bathrooms after two weeks of holiday traffic
  • Wipe window sills and tracks where spring pollen settles
  • Put away the holiday craft and games

Sunday: The Gear

  • Bags packed, hats found and uniforms ironed or hung
  • The landing zone set up and tested once
  • Kitchen bench cleared for Monday's lunches

Pro Tip: If the weekend is already full, book a reset clean for the Friday and keep Saturday for the gear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.When does Term 4 start in South Australia in 2026?

For South Australian public schools, Term 4 starts on Monday 12 October 2026 and runs to Friday 11 December. The spring school holidays run from Saturday 26 September to Sunday 11 October. Catholic and independent schools often follow the same calendar, but check your own school's dates because some differ by a day or two.

Q.What should I clean before the kids go back to school?

Start where school life lands: the entryway, school bags, lunchboxes and drink bottles, then the kitchen bench where lunches get made. After that, sort the wardrobe for the warmer uniform, and finish with a proper clean of floors and bathrooms so the first week of term starts calm.

Q.How do I keep spring pollen out of the house during Term 4?

Make shoes-off the rule at the door, keep a hook or basket for school bags and hats so they stay in one spot, and wipe window sills and door frames regularly. Washing school hats and bags every couple of weeks also helps, since they pick up pollen all day.

Q.Can MyHomeCleaning do a pre-term reset clean in Adelaide?

Yes. Our Adelaide team can reset floors, kitchen, bathrooms and living areas in the days before term starts, with the same trusted, fully insured and police-checked cleaner each visit. Tell us about your home and the timing you'd like and we'll put together a personalised quote.
